Signs
Segni rises 668 meters above sea level on the southern slopes of Monte Lupone and is considered one of the most important centers of the Lepini Mountains. This is thanks above all to the presence of numerous historical testimonies from the Roman and medieval era, in particular the monumental Cyclopean walls and the acropolis
The city of Segni is a true treasure chest, and houses some monuments of great interest, such as the Concathedral of Santa Maria Assunta built in the first half of the 17th century, on the ruins of a church dating back to the 20th century. Note the neoclassical style façade , and the high bell tower (about 24 m) from the 11th century. This is divided into 5 floors divided by a series of five hanging arches and as many windows. The tower clock has been in operation since 1933. The visit continues, entering the interior, where some valuable works are preserved such as the paintings by Francesco Cozza and the altarpiece of the main altar, which reproduces the Virgin of the Assumption supported by the Angels; a fresco in the chapel of S. Francesco attributed to Baciccio, and finally in the chapel of San Bruno the relics of the saint, Patron Saint of Segni, are preserved.
Anagni
A few km from Colleferro is Anagni
Located in the province of Frosinone, the city of Anagni is known in history as it was the papal city where 4 popes lived including Boniface VIII, one of the most powerful and discussed pontiffs in all of past history.
Palace of Boniface VIII
from here there is another place of great interest, it is the Palace of Boniface VIII, the home where one of the most discussed popes in all of history lived and where some of the most memorable events of the European Middle Ages took place.
The guided tour allows you to enter some rooms where decorations of great importance can still be appreciated, the Sala delle Oche is perhaps the most famous, but the most significant is certainly the Sala dello Schiaffo di Anagni, i.e. the one in which Giacono Sciarra Colonna, leader of over 1000 mercenary men, slapped Pope Boniface VIII.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria stands on the top of what was the ancient acropolis and its current appearance is the result of numerous construction phases that merged, gradually making expansions and modifications to the original style. The Gothic style was added to the Romanesque style (1072 – 1104) during the mid-13th century.
Palestrina
it is located about 43 km from Rome at 450 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Prenestini Mountains. It is one of the Lazio centers richest in historical, artistic and architectural testimonies, starting from the well-known Palazzo Colonna Barberini
The Palazzo Colonna Barberini was built in the 11th century on the site where the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia stood. However, what we currently see is not the original building. In fact, in the 15th century it was demolished and rebuilt. Inside it houses the Prenestino Archaeological Museum.
Another important monument is, as mentioned, the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia of which some sectors currently remain. It is one of the most important testimonies of the late Republican age. Careful studies have confirmed that its origins, in fact, date back to the 2nd century BC. Together with the museum, this very ancient monument is part of the museum system of Lazio.
